Benzodiazepine / Sleeping Pill Withdrawal Program

Benzodiazepines and Sleeping Pills should only be prescribed for short periods of time (7-14 days). When used for longer time frames they produce tolerance, or the need for increased doses to gain a similar effect.  Both classifications of medications work on GABAa, the inhibitory neurotransmitter of the nervous system.

Addiction to benzodiazepines is a serious concern.  Side effects include dulled awareness and brain function, increased anxiety and insomnia, weakness, an increase in pain, falls, stomach issues, sensitivity to light and sound and many others.  Even taking a small dose at bedtime can lead to accidents the following day - the same holds true for sleeping pills.

Benzodiazepines depress the nervous system and the body’s natural response to the increased sedation is to increase stimulation by up-regulating Glutamate, the excitatory neurotransmitter.  But if the drug is removed too rapidly, Glutamate floods the system without the calming GABAa to counteract the stimulation.  This is the mechanism that can cause a seizure in a cold-turkey withdrawal and why tapering is recommended under medical supervision. And according to Dr. Daniel Kripke, while sleeping pills are considered non-benzodiazepines, they bind to the same GABAa receptors and act like a benzodiazepine.
