Etrafon

(Triavil)

ETRAFON (Triavil) is a combination of a tricyclic antidepressant (Amitriptyline) and an antipsychotic (Perphenazine). Perphenazine is a typical antipsychotic and is considered a medium potency in treating Schizophrenia and shares the same toxic side effects as Thorazine.

Etrafon is a heterocyclic antidepressant that inhibits the nerve cells' ability to recycle norepinephrine and serotonin and instead pushes the levels higher in the brain. Etrafon is very sedating and may cause tardive dyskinesia, a condition marked by involuntary muscle spasms and twitches in the face and body. This condition may be permanent.

The possible food and drug interactions with Etrafon is extensive:
Airway opening drugs such as Proventil, MAOIs, Antidepressants that increase Serotonin, Antihistamines such as Benadryl, Anti-seizure drugs such as Dilantin, Anti-spasmodics such as Bentyl, Atropine, Barbiturates, Blood pressure medications, Blood thinners, Cimetidine (Tagamet), Epinephrine (EpiPen), Ethcholorvynol (Placidyl), Flexainide (Tambocor), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Fluphenazine (Prolixin), Furazolidone (Furoxone), Guanethidine, Major tranquilizers (Haldol), Narcotic analgesics (Percocet), Phosphorus insecticides, Propafenone (Rythmol), Quinidine, Thloridazine (Mellaril), Thyroid medications
